Making Saturn’s Moons with a Bang

first_imgImpacts are a favorite tool for planetary scientists to create beautiful things. The press had just gone wild with visions of a colossal impact creating the Earth-Moon system (10/18/2012), when Saturn cried, “Me, too!”  A spate of reports claims the improbable assortment of moons at the ringed planet are the result of another dramatic impact (at least in simulations).  The story was carried by Space.com, Live Science, Science Daily and Nature News (i.e., the usual suspects). It’s not that the Saturn system “did” form this way; it’s that it “could” have, as Nature News‘ headline states: “Moon-merge model could explain Saturnian system;  Simulation suggests that the moons of Saturn were once more like Jupiter’s.”  The Jupiter system is hard enough to explain, but planetologists feel it is a little more orderly than Saturn’s odd collection of small icy bodies (with active Enceladus and inactive Mimas), big icy bodies, and Titan, the oddest of all. With widely ranging densities and locations, Saturn’s six mid-size satellites are among the strangest in the outer Solar System. Measuring between 300 and 1,500 kilometres in diameter, the moons have varying characteristics: several are made almost entirely of frozen water; one, Enceladus, is rockier and geologically active; and some show evidence of submoons and rings. How did they get this way? With their charming impact video, the Saturnian modelers are apparently trying to share the limelight with the Galvanized Lunacy club: “Earth’s moon is thought to have formed from a giant impact about 4.5 billion years ago. And just as the moon and Earth are geochemical twins, the half-dozen or so medium-size moons of Saturn are similar in composition to Titan’s icy mantle, researchers said.”Science Daily included this gaffe by the modeler:“What makes the Saturn system so beautiful and unique could be its youth,” Asphaug said. “While we don’t have a preferred timeframe for this origin scenario to play out, it could have happened recently if something came along to destabilize the Saturn system, triggering the collisional mergers that formed Titan.”Nature News, though, called on Hal Levison, whose toy models have trouble creating Uranus and Neptune (8/06/2004), to do the reality check:But Hal Levison, an astronomer who studies planetary dynamics at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, says that the model is currently too simple to work. As the model is now configured, he says, the mid-size moons would inevitably accrete on to Titan rather than survive in isolation.Perhaps he said this to help keep his colleagues in the planetary billiards hall employed, and to keep the game going (10/18/2012).Warning: never buy a house from these folks.  They bang the materials against each other and hope something emerges. The best part of this story is Eric Asphaug admitting that Saturn’s system looks young.  At the 15th anniversary of Cassini mission, he is well aware of the problems with the rings, Enceladus, Titan and other things that cannot fit into the standard 4.5 billion year timeline.  It’s a tacit admission that the evidence does not fit the standard story without a colossal ad hoc rescue device. 2010 ‘one of our greatest achievements’

first_img27 September 2010The 2010 Fifa World Cup was one of the greatest achievements of post-apartheid South Africa, President Jacob Zuma said at the national Heritage Day celebrations at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday. While acknowledging the economic and infrastructural achievements around the World Cup, the President said Heritage Day 2010 was a day for South Africans to celebrate their contribution to the promotion of the country to the world “as a bastion of peace, stability, progress and unity.“The wearing of Bafana Bafana jerseys and the display of the rainbow flags everywhere in our country by patriotic South Africans will forever be part of our heritage,” Zuma said. The unity experienced in South Africa had been the highlight of the tournament, showing the potential for further nation building.“The fact that so many white South Africans, young and old, filled the stadiums to celebrate the soccer tournament, while black people flocked to Orlando Stadium [in Soweto] before the World Cup to celebrate rugby, shows that we have not even begun to harness the potential for creating a common national identity”.The World Cup had also played a role in promoting African unity. “The support provided to Ghana and all African teams indicated that South Africans realize that the country is an integral part of the continent,” Zuma said.“Therefore, our national days such as Freedom Day, Heritage Day, Youth Day, and Women’s Day should become more focused celebrations of the ushering in of freedom and democracy in our country, and the promoting of building a common future”.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Secrets of Self-Care | Dehydration

first_imgThis MFLN-Military Caregiving concentration blog post was published on September 1, 2017. Written by Alicia Cassels, MA, MFLN Military Caregiving Team MemberIssues Related to DehydrationProper hydration is important in maintaining wellness.  According to the American Heart Association (AHA), proper hydration helps the heart pump blood more easily and helps with muscle performance.  The AHA points out that dehydration can lead to swollen feet, headache and in some extreme cases, heat stroke.  Additionally, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cautions that dehydration can contribute to unclear thinking, mood change, constipation, overheating and kidney stones (2017).In a 2011 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, young women who were mildly dehydrated experienced degraded mood, lower concentration and increased perception of task difficulty. Another study, conducted at the University of Connecticut and published in the British Journal of Nutirition showed that mild dehydration impairs mental performance and mood in men (2011).This is the second in three installments of the Secrets of Self-Care – Upgrade Your Health: Hydrate series. You can catch up on part one – “Is Hydration One of Your Daily Priorities” and be sure to check back soon for the final installment, “How Much Fluid Should We Drink Each Day?”Cited Research and Additional Sources:American Heart Association.  (2014).  Staying Hydrated-Staying Healthy. Processing of Banana Loans Begins Tomorrow

first_imgCome tomorrow (Nov.14), the People’s Cooperative (PC) Bank is slated to begin processing loan applications for the disbursement of $100 million to banana farmers ,who suffered heavy losses during the passage of Hurricane Sandy three weeks ago. Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Roger Clarke, said that the exercise will commence at the Trinity boxing plant in St Mary, one of the three banana producing parishes hardest hit. The others are Portland and St. Thomas. Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the loan facility at the Ministry’s Hope Gardens offices on Tuesday (Nov. 13), Minister Clarke, informed that the processing of loan applications for farmers in Portland will commence on Friday (Nov. 16) at the Boundbrook Wharf. The loan facility was negotiated by the Ministry with the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ), which has dispatched the funds to the PC bank, for disbursement through its branches. The Ministry was able to provide $13. 5 million in subsidy, which will enable the farmers to receive the loans at a five per cent interest rate, down from the 8.5 per cent proposed by DBJ. Mr. Clarke indicated that the $100 million represents a 100 per cent increase on $50 million previously earmarked by the DBJ to finance a Ministry pilot project aimed at resuscitating the industry and stimulating the local market in the wake of significant dislocation caused by Tropical Storms Gustav and Nicole in 2008 and 2010, respectively. “We were on the verge of moving forward to see how well we could get back on track…(and) were awaiting disbursement of the funds and the implementation (of the) programme (when) Hurricane Sandy (struck). It…might (well have been)…a blessing in disguise that we did not put that $50 million programme in place earlier, because  we would have been back at square one,’ the Minister stated. He encouraged the farmers to make their applications to the PC Banks in order to access this facility, noting that they must be registered with the Rural Agricultural Development Agency (RADA) and the Banana Board. He said that the Banana Board, through its Transfer Officers, will be providing technical support to assist the farmers in preparing their loan applications. This provision, which he informed, is being underwritten by the Agricultural Credit Board (ACB) at a cost of $5 million, is to “ensure that all the protocols and standards of production are achieved to guarantee the success of this supervised loan programme”. Minister Clarke also advised that additional assessments are being conducted in St. Mary consequent on heavy flood rains, which lashed the parish over the last weekend. Jamaica’s agricultural sector sustained heavy damage and losses totalling some $1.5 billion during the passage of Hurricane Sandy on October 24, resulting in the dislocation of some 37,000 farmers.  Approximately 70 per cent of the local banana industry was impacted, with Portland, St, Thomas and St. Mary recording up to 100 per cent losses. Bananas aside, there was damage to plantains, cocoa, root crops, tubers, poultry, vegetables, and sugar cane, and Clarke disclosed that relief is also being extended to these are other sub-sectors, through RADA. These include: the distribution of fertilizer, chickens, feeds, seeds, and funding to assist with making purchases. “I think, in total, we are going to be distributing about 22,000 bags of fertilizer. We were assisted by (local fertilizer manufacturer Newport) Fersan Limited, which made a donation of about 1000 bags and we are purchasing the rest (from them). They have kindly consented to give us a discount of about eight per cent from what we are buying from them,” the Minister informed.last_img read more

LEE Gaskell has joined Salford City Reds on loan u

first_imgLEE Gaskell has joined Salford City Reds on loan until the end of the season. The 22-year-old half back has made 43 appearances for the Club since making his debut in 2010 but has found chances limited in 2013.Coming the other way is Stuart Howarth, 23, who is a hooker / loose forward. He was the only Reds player to feature in every one of the club’s 29 matches last season, mostly as a hooker but as scrum half towards the latter end of the campaign.Saints Head Coach Nathan Brown said: “At this stage of his career Lee needs to be playing more regularly and with chances limited at present it made sense for him to go out on loan.“We’re looking forward to watching him develop and I’m sure he will do a good job for Salford.“Stuart has shown in his time at Salford that he is a capable and experienced player and will prove more than adequate cover for a multitude of positions.“He will be put straight into the Good Friday squad and we are confident he will do well.”last_img read more
