SANParks goes ‘wild about soccer’

first_imgSAinfo reporter DreamFields Project founder John Perlman saw the partnership with SANParks as “a way of changing the social make-up in marginalised communities”. In a statement issued this week, the Dreamfields Project says its three-year partnership with SANParks’ People and Conservation (P&C) unit – dubbed “Wild about Soccer” – is aimed at engaging young people at the level of their passion: football. SANParks CEO David Mabunda has endorsed the project, saying: “The best way to get young people to understand and develop respect for the environment in conservation areas is to start by making positive and visible changes in the environments where they live”. Companies and individuals can sponsor a R5 500 DreamBag to a school. It contains 3 soccer balls, 15 pairs of boots and 15 sets of kit, including numbered shirts, shorts and socks. Raising awareness “Wild About Soccer”, he said, was not just about the beautiful game, but was about using sport as means of building knowledge about, and respect for, something worth preserving – our natural heritage. The Dreamfields Project joined forces with SANParks’ P&C unit to bring the “Wild about Soccer” tournaments to these secluded communities, with every tournament within the project providing an opportunity to educate young people about conservation and the environment. Launched in 2006, the Dreamfields Project is a section 21 company that uses soccer as a force for good in township and rural schools. DreamBags Dreamfields will provide DreamBags containing a complete soccer kit to the participating schools for continued development of their learners through the game of soccer.center_img “As a start, we will be handing out DreamBags filled with soccer kits for tournaments in rural communities, but our long-term goal is to help fix up some fields in villages bordering on our parks,” Perlman said. To date, 240 schools and organizations have received DreamBags, while donations and sponsorships are being used to build new soccer fields and improve sporting infrastructure in townships and rural areas. ‘A force for good’ South African National Parks (SANParks) has teamed up with the Dreamfields Project to merge the seemingly separate worlds of conservation and soccer for the benefit of young people living in communities situated around national parks. “We are wild about this project, and wild about our partnership with SANParks.” Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? The DreamBag handover coincides with a DreamEvent, which is a soccer tournament at which the sponsor, community and other supporters come together and enjoy the beautiful game. 5 September 2008last_img read more

2010 ‘one of our greatest achievements’

first_img27 September 2010The 2010 Fifa World Cup was one of the greatest achievements of post-apartheid South Africa, President Jacob Zuma said at the national Heritage Day celebrations at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday. While acknowledging the economic and infrastructural achievements around the World Cup, the President said Heritage Day 2010 was a day for South Africans to celebrate their contribution to the promotion of the country to the world “as a bastion of peace, stability, progress and unity.“The wearing of Bafana Bafana jerseys and the display of the rainbow flags everywhere in our country by patriotic South Africans will forever be part of our heritage,” Zuma said. The unity experienced in South Africa had been the highlight of the tournament, showing the potential for further nation building.“The fact that so many white South Africans, young and old, filled the stadiums to celebrate the soccer tournament, while black people flocked to Orlando Stadium [in Soweto] before the World Cup to celebrate rugby, shows that we have not even begun to harness the potential for creating a common national identity”.The World Cup had also played a role in promoting African unity. “The support provided to Ghana and all African teams indicated that South Africans realize that the country is an integral part of the continent,” Zuma said.“Therefore, our national days such as Freedom Day, Heritage Day, Youth Day, and Women’s Day should become more focused celebrations of the ushering in of freedom and democracy in our country, and the promoting of building a common future”.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Nana Patekar responds to charges with legal notice

first_imgAs actor Tanushree Dutta — who has made allegations of sexual harassment against veteran actor Nana Patekar — began to find support from within the film industry, his lawyer Rajendra Shirodkar sent her a legal notice.Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Shirodkar said, “We have sent a legal notice to Ms. Dutta today in the evening denying all allegations made by her and seeking a written apology. If she does not respond to the same, we shall take further action which can either be filing for criminal defamation or a suit for damages.”The actor has claimed that she was sexually harassed by Mr. Patekar on a film set in 2008 — with choreographer Ganesh Acharya, producer Sami Siddiqui and director Rakesh Sarang being complicit. She also said that members of Raj Thackeray’s political outfit Maharashtra Navnirman Sena encircled and damaged her car when she attempted to leave the set with her parents. Ms. Dutta is said to have filed a complaint with the Cine and Television Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) shortly after the incident. A statement from Ms. Dutta to The Hindu said, “A man who is claiming to be Nana Patekar’s advocate is calling up people close to Tanushree and media houses alike threatening to drag Tanushree to court for speaking up. Even after 10 years Nana Patekar is still harassing Tanushree Dutta with legal threats and intimidation tactics while the whole world is watching.”Standing in solidarityFormer broadcast journalist Janice Sequeira has corroborated Ms. Dutta’s account. Ms. Sequeira tweeted what she had witnessed while covering a behind-the-scenes account of a song shoot on the day. Shyni Shetty, then an assistant director, also wrote a personal account of what transpired on the day, partly confirming both Ms. Dutta’s and Ms. Sequeira’s accounts.Farhan Akhtar tweeted, “This thread is very telling. @janiceseq85 was there at the time of the incident being debated today. Even when #TanushreeDutta had career concerns to keep quiet 10 years ago she did not & her story hasn’t changed now. Her courage should be admired, not her intention questioned.” Retweeting Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra tweeted, “Agreed..the world needs to #BelieveSurvivors”Twinkle Khanna tweeted, “A working environment without harassment and intimidation is a fundamental right and by speaking up this brave woman helps pave the way towards that very goal for all of us!”Siddharth Suryanaryan wrote on Twitter, “Reporting abuse is traumatic. To be analysed in public for it is torture. To have some bastard suggest the woman is doing it for attention is inhuman. You always give the victim benefit of the doubt. Enough with shaming! Innocent men will overcome any accusation!” Apurva Asrani tweeted, “Sad. My people don’t think twice about raising their voice for the West’s #MeToo movement, but sit silent, promoting each other’s films, whilst #TanushreeDutta fights a lone battle against #NanaPatekar. Too many skeletons in too many closets. A #HouseOfCards waiting to collapse…”Richa Chadha said, “No woman wants publicity that opens the floodgates of trolling and insensitivity. What happened to her on set was intimidation. Her only fault was she didn’t back down — takes a special courage to be #TanushreeDutta.” Raveena Tandon tweeted, “When our industry fails to stand for and protect its own. They get their chance and lose it. Makes our films on women empowerment hollow. The deafening silence on #TanushreeDutta case is sickening.”Parineeti Chopra tweeted, “Survivors… have dealt with something horrible and come out on the other side. So believe them, respect them.”last_img read more

IPL 2011: Kings XI Punjab vs Deccan Chargers- DC win by 82 runs

first_imgHyderabad opener Shikhar Dhawan scored an impressive 95 not out and later leggie Amit Mishra took a hat-trick as Hyderabad beat Punjab by 82 runs during an IPL match the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Tuesday. Score | PhotosPunjab got off to a rather poor start against Hyderabad and the reason was the daunting 199-run target that proved to be too tough for the hosts.Opener Paul Valthaty fell on the fourth ball of the first over off Dale Steyn on five and the next over saw Aussie Shaun Marsh walk back to a JP Duminy ball on 13 when the team total was 22/2.Post the early setback, captain Adam Gilchrist and Dinesh Karthik got on with a partnership to salvage the Punjab innings. But they were still lagging behind as far as the run rate was concerned as after 10 overs the Punjab total was 77/2 as compared to Hyderabad’s 85/0.Their 61-run partnership came to an end in the 11th over off Daniel Christian. A full length ball outside off was struck towards the extra covers region by opposition skipper Adam Gilchrist, where Cameroon White took an easy catch to dismiss him on 51. And Punjab lost their third wicket on 83.A ball later Karthik too walked back with caught D Ravi Teja, bowled Christian written against his initials on 11. Punjab were down to 84/4 in 11 overs.A few minutes later, Hyderabad’s left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed Abhiskek Nayar to reduce Punjab to 91/5.Then in the 16th over leg spinner Amit Mishra took a hat-trick and got rid of Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh and Ryan Harris to reduce Punjab to 102/8.advertisementMishra finished with impressive figures of 4-1-7-4 as Hyderabad won the match by 82 runs. With this loss, Punjab’s hopes of making it to the qualifiers have gone up in smoke.Hyderabad inningsHyderabad Shikhar Dhawan opener carried his bat through scoring an unbeaten 95 as Hyderabad posted an impressive 198/2 against Punjab.Earlier, Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and elected to field in the 67th IPL match of the season. This is the last league game for both teams as the IPL-4 now heads into the knock-out stage.Hyderabad opener Shikhar Dhawan and D Ravi Teja, opening in place of regular opener and Hyderabad skipper Kumar Sangakkara, started the innings of a positive note scoring at a brisk pace. Sangakkara is busy doing national duty for Sri Lanka in England.Teja and Dhawan batted with ease and rotated the strike to frustrate the opposition bowlers. Post the 10th over, Hyderabad score was a good 85/0.Finally, in the 14th over Teja fell after putting on a fine 60 runs on board when the team total was 131. A Paul Valthaty ball took the edge of Teja’s bat and Abhiskek Nayar at deep mid-wicket pouched it to end Teja’s 41-ball innings that was decorated with five fours and two sixes. But, post that wicket new man JP Duminy did not stay at the crease for long and departed on the first ball of the 17th over off Ryan Harris when batting on 12. Hyderabad were 158/2 post his fall.Opener Dhawan remained unbeaten on 95, hitting an impressive 14 fours and one over the fence shot in his 57-ball innings as Hyderabad scored 198/2.last_img read more

Championships Not Just a Players Domain

first_imgThe NQ Championships has always been a pillar on the Touch calendar for players across North Queensland, but the appeal that it has for referees is something else altogether.Always regarded as the “must attend” for the North’s referees, 2013’s event was no different with 44 referees making the pilgrimage to Townsville for two days of the best Touch Football in North Queensland.Such is the appeal of the event to referees, the NQ contingent of officials was joined by three referees from “the South”; Sunshine Coast’s Greg Kidd, Danielle Nunn and Hayden Smith. For Nunn and Smith the NQ Champs has become somewhat of a regular trip, having attended the event for the last two years but, for Kidd, this year’s event was a brand new experience.“For me it’s a total eye-opener, something that I’ve never had the chance to do before. I’ve been to plenty of tournaments over the years, but I haven’t enjoyed one like I have this weekend.”The three aren’t the first to make the trek north to participate in the event, the event has regularly included referees from outside the region and it’s something that NQ Touch Executive Officer, Billy Grant, is very proud of.“We have a quality event up here and it’s no surprise that referees from outside the region want to come up. They know that they are looked after when they come up and they always leave wanting to come back next year.”Adding to the appeal for referees is the fact that it is one of the only non-state events in the country to be endorsed as a “Level Four upgradeable” event, enabling referees to be considered for upgrade to Level Four; another feat that Grant is proud of.“We were endorsed by TFA for the first time in 2010 and since then we’ve had the chance to upgrade several of our referees to Level Four. We’ve even been able to upgrade some referees from down south too.”This year, Nunn joined the upgrades list, receiving her Level Four badge alongside NQ Referees Chris Benstead, Andrew Watkins (Townsville Castle Hill) and Linda Miller (Mackay). The North Queensland Touch Association would like to congratulate the following referees who were upgraded over the weekend.Level ThreeKarl Raffe – Townsville Castle HillNoel Lang – MackayDarryl Lyon – Charters TowersRegan Cheetham – MackayBob Pentacost – Cairns PiratesLevel FourChris Benstead – Townsville Castle HillAndrew Watkins – Townsville Castle HillLinda Miller – MackayDanielle Nunn – Sunshine CoastThank you to Kerrod Hall from North Queensland Touch for providing the content.Related LinksNot Just a Player Domainlast_img read more
