Chilling Out With Air Conditioners

first_img[This reflects a few corrections from the original posting]My wife and I did our outside work early, while the weather was still bearable. Since mid-day we’ve been holed up in the house. It’s not exactly cool indoors, but we’ve had the house closed up and it’s about 15 degrees cooler than outdoors. If it gets much warmer, though, I admit that I’ll at least be thinking about getting an air conditioner—as I do every year for a few days during the hottest weather.Readers of last week’s blog know that there are usually ways to avoid mechanical air conditioning (at least in Vermont)—though in places like Phoenix (where it was forecast to reach 109°F today), air conditioners are pretty-much a necessity. So what is an air conditioner exactly, and how does it work?A short history of refrigerant-cycle air conditionersRemarkably, one of our founding fathers, Ben Franklin, had a hand in the underlying science of air conditioning. In 1758, Ben Franklin and a colleague in England, chemist John Hadley, conducted an experiment on the cooling properties of evaporation. By using a bellows to evaporate highly volatile liquids like alcohol and ether, they were able to drop the temperature to 7°F, building up a thick layer of ice on their mercury thermometer—while the ambient temperature was 64°F.In 1820, another of history’s greatest scientists, the British inventor Michael Faraday, showed that by mechanically compressing ammonia to liquefy (condense) it and then allowing the ammonia to expand and evaporate, he could cool air. And in 1842, a Florida physician, John Gorrie, wanting to keep patients cool, was able to use this principal to make ice in an Apalachicola hospital. Gorrie patented his system in 1851 and hoped to commercialize it to cool buildings, but his financial backer died, and with it, Gorrie’s path to success. Air conditioning would not reappear for 50 years. In 1902, Willis Carrier of Syracuse, New York perfected a system for dehumidifying a commercial printing plant. The goal was to stabilize the paper, but the invention also kept the plant’s temperature more comfortable and the workers more productive. He formed The Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America to produce these systems, eventually extending beyond commercial buildings to homes. With 32,000 employees in 170 countries, Carrier Corporation (now a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation) is today one of the world leaders in high-technology heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems.Refrigerant-cycle air conditionersThe operation of a mechanical air conditioner depends on a refrigerant, a specialized fluid whose phase can be altered between liquid and vapor by compressing and then evaporating it in a closed loop. This phase change process absorbs and releases heat, thus enabling an air conditioner to move heat from one place to another—even if that heat flow is from a cooler to a warmer space (seemingly in opposition to Second Law of Thermodynamics). This vapor-compression or refrigerant cycle is the principle behind nearly all air conditioners, as well as heat pumps and your kitchen refrigerator. It’s a complicated process, though, so hang onto your hat!In an air conditioner, refrigerant is pumped through a closed loop where it is alternately evaporated and condensed. In the process of evaporation, which usually occurs inside the house, heat from the house is absorbed into the refrigerant—cooling the house. That gaseous refrigerant is then pumped to the condenser, located outside the house, where the compressor mechanically compresses the vapor, increasing its pressure and causing it to condense back into liquid; this process releases the heat that was absorbed inside the house. The evaporator coils and condenser coils are heat exchangers that transfer heat first from the indoor air into the refrigerant and then from the refrigerant to the outside air. It’s an elegant process that is largely hidden inside the air conditioner components. In a window air conditioner, this refrigerant cycle occurs in a single box, absorbing heat on the room side and rejecting it on the side hanging outside the window. In a central air conditioner the indoor and outdoor units are separate and connected by refrigerant lines. To summarize, this refrigerant cycle is a closed loop, and two phase changes occur every time the refrigerant is pumped around that loop. Heat is absorbed on one side of the loop (evaporation) and rejected on the other (condensation). In a heat pump this refrigerant cycle can be reversed allowing heat from the outside air the be captured and delivered into the house during the winter months. (I told you this was going to be complicated!)Very significantly, air conditioners lower household humidity levels. This occurs because the evaporator coils that are in contact with the house air are cold (below the dew point temperature), and moisture from the indoor air condenses on them (just as water condenses on the outside of your glass of iced tea on a hot humid day). This condensate is captured and drained outside the building, thus removing that moisture from the house and lowering the relative humidity. That condensate is what drips on you when you walk underneath a window air conditioner in the summer.Alex is founder of BuildingGreen, Inc. and executive editor of Environmental Building News. What is Success? The Ultimate Guide

first_imgHaving been in sales for the majority of my adult life, I have a lot of insight into what it takes to become one of the highest-paid people in the profession. There are some vital keys to success in sales and laying down the groundwork early can help you accelerate your career and become one of the truly successful, highly paid salespeople in no time. When you look at a lot of what is being written about sales and selling, you see a lot of focus right now on artificial intelligence, automation, and other technologies. You also see a lot of focus on sales processes and methodologies, with the new and exciting refresh of old ideas that gain a lot of attention on the social channels. It’s important to note that success in sales, just like any endeavor, is multifactorial. It is usually consisting of competencies in a number of different areas. While all of the tools, technologies, processes, and methodologies are good and useful, there are some predominant areas to take a deep look at when it comes to producing organizational and entrepreneurial success in sales. Let’s walk through some of the key factors that will help you achieve success and go above and beyond when it comes to making yourself stand out in sales.Self-DisciplineSelf-discipline is the foundational attribute or skill necessary to succeed in any endeavor – and this is doubly true of sales. Self-discipline in sales is the ability to keep the promises one makes to one’s self. It is impossible to keep one’s promises to others if you can’t keep the promises you make to yourself. In actuality, the promises you make to others really are promises you make to yourself.I like to think of self-discipline as a ringing alarm clock. To me, this symbolizes a commitment to rising early and getting started on the work you need to do in order to succeed. What helps you be your best starting first thing in the morning? Do you need to work out to get your blood pumping? Do you need to read something that inspires and motivates you? Do you need to research your calls? Do you need to engage in self-development? When the alarm goes off, you either jump out of bed and into self-discipline mode or you hit the snooze and have a lazy day. It’s completely up to you.As to discipline and sales, I have witnessed the magic of disciplined sales people succeeding because of their discipline alone, despite having no natural sales attributes or abilities. They made their prospecting calls every day. They made their sales calls every day. They did what needed to be done every day without fail. Some of them were horrible salespeople when in front of the prospect, but they were always in front of the prospect. They produced week after week; singles, doubles, and the occasional home run.I have also had the displeasure of watching (and managing) salespeople with massive natural talent fail only because they lacked self-discipline. Despite the ability to gain rapport instantly, being exceedingly attractive, and being able to discover ways to create value for prospects, they lacked the discipline to sit down and make their prospecting calls. They missed their activity quota every week. They were rarely in front of prospects. You know some of these reps; they have such great ability to sell, they sell their way into keeping their jobs despite abysmal performance (for a while, anyway).Developing self-discipline is dependent on making commitments to yourself and keeping those commitments. Start by writing your commitments down and then taking action to keep those commitments, no matter how large or small. You will see the impact on your success if you stick to them on a consistent basis.Organizational Sales SuccessSales and selling on an organizational level boils down to two main components: sales leadership and salespeople.Importance of Sales LeadershipSales leadership is first and foremost in determining sales success. Leadership counts for more than your sales process, more than your methodologies, more than your CRM and more than any other tool. If you have exceedingly strong sales leadership, it counts for much more than the product, more than the company itself and more than any other factor that contributes – across any industry. Your best bet to working toward sales success in an organization is to devote your attention to building sales leaders above than anything else.Importance of Great SalespeopleAfter building great sales managers, the second most important factor in ensuring success is devoting time and energy to your people. My first book, The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need, speaks to this very fact. Success relies on the individual. It’s not the result of having the right territory or having the right product, even though high waters can cover a lot of stumps. The salesperson makes up so much of the value proposition in larger, complex sales. This isn’t to say that processes, methodologies, tools, and technologies are not of great value. They are absolutely important and essential, but the recipe for success is to start with people. That means building a power plant of sales success that imparts you, as a salesperson, or your team with the abilities to create the greatest competitive advantage to produce better sales.Three-Pound Power Plant of Sales SuccessIn order for salespeople to have a defining differentiator that makes it more likely to be chosen over your competitors, you have to develop existing concepts to their full potential. There are five factors that work together to make up what I call the “Power Plant of Sales Success.” If you are able to work them out completely, they will add up to a real competitive advantage in sales.Developing Ideas and ResourcefulnessThe human brain is the strongest superpower that exists in the entire universe. We are all walking around with a three-pound powerplant that is the source of all of our ideas, and ideas are creativity translated into resourcefulness. You need ideas in order to create value for your dream clients. Ideas are what nurture your client relationships over time and help your clients and your dream clients with their most difficult business challenges. The more you use your brain to generate ideas, the stronger it gets and the more efficient it becomes at generating more ideas. These tips can help you strengthen your creative muscles in order to come up with better ideas.Sit down in a quiet place first thing in the morningEliminate all distractionsStart brainstorming and writing down ideas on a piece of paperMake lists and answer questions (i.e. What could I do to nurture these relationships?)Don’t stop until you have filled the whole page. This should take you about an hour and you’ll find that it gets easier and easier over time.Developing Business AcumenBusiness acumen is critical to success. The game of sales is changing dramatically. Your business acumen has never been more important than it is right now and in the future, it will be so critical that you will be useless to your dream clients without it. If you don’t learn about business and spend time thinking about how what you learn applies to you and your dream clients, you are wasting your time.Your three-pound power plant of sales success wasn’t born containing knowledge about business—or anything else for that matter. Much like a computer, you have to fill it with what it needs. Here are just a few ways you can consistently work on your business acumen throughout the length of your career:Take a class on business, business finance, marketing, or similarRead business magazines and journals (Fast Company, Business Week)Read business booksRead other books to understand how things workFind teachers within your company, your client’s companyMake notes as to how you believe what you read applies to you, your company, your dream clientsDevelop Your Emotional IntelligenceYour brain isn’t only the universe’s greatest computer; it’s also equipped with the ability to deeply connect with other human beings. It is equipped with emotions that enable these connections—or it is sometimes disabled by them.Despite the great technological changes in how we connect and how we manage and nurture human relationships, the great underlying fundamental is our connectedness to other human beings. Your brain can be developed to help you connect with other human beings. You have the ability to develop your emotional intelligence and empathy. Keep these things in mind when you are communicating with a client:Recognize their emotionsImagine yourself in your dream client’s shoes—really feel itListen to people and accept their interpretation as true for themPause between stimulus and response and consider the outcome you needUse emotions to drive actionDevelop Your Focus, Your Attention, and Your Ability to Take ActionYour brain isn’t very easy to manage. It is a novelty-seeking device that is easily entertained by new and shiny objects, regardless of their worth. It also loves to be entertained and distracted by things like television, YouTube, and mindless emails. Your brain can also be very, very lazy if you allow it to be.To get the most of the trillions of neural connections in your pinkish-gray matter, you have to develop the ability to focus. You have to develop the ability to eliminate distractions (no, not all of the time, you need some distractions). You have to develop your ability to give the things that are important to your success in sales your complete attention. That focus and attention have to be translated into the concrete actions that produce the outcomes that you need to succeed and that you need to be someone of value for your dream clients.Develop and Control Your BeliefsIf there is one area where your human brain cannot be left to its own devices, it is your beliefs.Your brain will, if allowed, create an unhealthy belief system designed to protect your self-esteem and ego. It will come up with beliefs that allow it to seek the novelties and distractions that derail your sales success. It will create a belief structure that rationalizes your unhealthy behaviors so that both of you don’t do what is uncomfortable—but necessary. Keep these steps in mind every day:Spend time thinking about what you think aboutWrite down your deeply held beliefsAsk if your beliefs still serve youCompare your beliefs and the behaviors they recommend with the beliefs and actions of people who are producing the results that you desireWork on un-entrenching from unhealthy beliefsSuccess in sales today, as always, is a multi-faceted journey. Advancing the sales with prospects and achieving the outcomes that you sell requires imagination, creativity, leadership, and daily devotion in order to differentiate yourself from the masses. For more on increasing your sales effectiveness, subscribe to the RSS Feed for The Sales Blog and my Email Newsletter. Adityanath asks BJP functionaries to shun contracts

first_imgUttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi today asked all BJP office bearers and public representatives not to undertake any contractual work and instead monitor them for effective execution. He said BJP’s unprecedented win the recent Assembly elections had only increased the responsibilities of the party and its workers.“No office bearer of the party or any public representative should undertake any contractual work (thekedaari). They should rather monitor them. And, if they find any discrepancy, they can inform me, so that action could be taken immediately against the guilty,” he said.Addressing people at the BJP’s regional office on the second day of his Gorakhpur visit, he said, “After victory, a number of important works have to be accomplished. The people of the state have reposed their faith in us, and the onus is on us to meet their expectations, while ensuring accountability of our actions.”Adityanath also laid stress on sense of responsibility and accountibility among his ministerial colleagues. Also Read 80% of new U.P. MLAs are crorepatis  “I am the CM. (Surya Pratap) Shahi ji is Cabinet minister. But the post of CM or Cabinet Minister is not meant for flaunting. In fact, it is an indicator of one’s responsibility and accountability towards the public, which elected you with an overwhelming majority,” he said, pointing towards some ministers present there.‘Work 20 hours a day or leave’The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, who is still the local MP, urged the party to gear up for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.“In the next two years, you have to work tirelessly, irrespective of the fact that there is sunshine, rain or biting cold. Efforts should be made to ensure that the welfare schemes of the Centre percolate to the last strata of the society, and needy people are able to avail its benefits,” he said, amidst a thunderous applause from the audience.Underscoring the need for improved work culture, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also said people who were prepared to work for 18-20 hours a day are “most welcome” to join him, the rest are free to leave.“Time has come that we should work 18-20 hours a day. There no time for any entertainment (mauj masti),” he said.He also urged the people to help him break the negative image of UP.“For the past few years Uttar Pradesh has been defined as a state from whose boundaries begins darkness, from where the pot-holed roads begin and the place from where the women start to feel insecure. I was to break this mindset,” he said, and added that he wants to make UP a place, where women feel safe and secure.‘Doors must be open to the public’Adityanath said, “I would like to assure that in the next two months, people would come to know how a state government should work. I have got an opportunity to clean the mess (kachdaa saaf karne kaa maukaa milaa hai), and I will do it.”He also advised his ministers that they should be accessible to the public. “The doors of your house and office must remain open to the public. This would ensure that the government is able to reach to the last person of the society. No one would go to bed empty stomach and money would not be a constraint in marriage of any girl,” he said.Referring to the acid attack on a woman from Rae Bareli, Adityanath, said, “The officials are working on ‘puraanaa dharraa’ (old style). I went to KGMU to inquire about the well being of the woman and gave them ultimatum that everything must be done in the next couple of hours.”‘No place for criminals’He also referred to the Agra loot, which was worked out.“There is no place for those who give patronage to the gooda elements, mafia, criminal and other rogue elements. They have the option of leaving UP or else they would land in places designated for them (jails),” he said, while hinting at massive revamping of law and order. He also talked about people committing electricity theft facing the music. “The situation has already improved in Gorakhpur and it would soon improve in the state as well,” he said.“If you find any discrepancy or anomaly, just message me the relevant details. I will ensure action,” he said.last_img read more
