PensionDanmark backs government plan for agriculture investment fund

first_imgHe said this would result in growth and employment particularly in those parts of Denmark where they were most needed.Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark’s minister for business and growth, said there were many farmers with effective businesses that they were ready to invest in, but who were hindered by high levels of debt.“Several hundred businesses are assessed as being effective enough to be able to remain profitable by investing more in their production combined with a long-term solution for their overall debt,” he said, adding that these were exactly the farmers the fund was targeting.Danish Agricultural Capital would receive a DKK500m transfer from the state. The ministry said the goal was to attract at least a further DKK500m from pension funds and possibly other investors to reach the initial goal of raising DKK1bn.It said the Danish Growth Fund would run the new farms fund, and that it was working right now on making deals with a range of larger pension funds to invest in it.“If the negotiations go as we expect,” Lund Poulsen said, “Danish Agricultural Capital will be able to grant its first loan at the start of 2017.”The new farm financing fund would offer subordinated loans that are non-callable by Danish Agricultural Capital. The ministry said there were no fixed sizes or terms for the loans and that they were expected to be for DKK5m to DKK10m, with terms of up to eight years at an individually fixed rate of interest.Loans are expected to be given to 150-200 farms over the next few years. PensionDanmark has voiced its support for an investment fund being launched by Denmark’s Ministry of Business and Growth to raise DKK2bn (€269m) of equity and debt financing for Danish farms.Torben Möger Pedersen, chief executive of the DKK189bn labour-market pension fund, said: “There has been a constructive dialogue for some time between the Ministry of Business and Growth, the Danish Growth Fund and several Danish pension funds about setting up Danish Agricultural Capital (Dansk Landbrugskapital).”The Danish Growth Fund (Vækstfonden) is a state investment fund set up in 1992 that invests equity and provides loans and guarantees for small and medium-sized enterprises in conjunction with private partners and Danish financial institutions. “It now looks as if a model has been found in which PensionDanmark and other investors can put capital into the new fund, thereby making a reasonable return while at the same time helping supply financing for skilled farmers keen to invest in their businesses,” Möger Pedersen said.last_img read more

USC claws past Arizona at home

first_imgMatt Barkley saw a lot of Carson Palmer when the Heisman Trophy winner played for USC in the early 2000s. Growing up in nearby Newport Beach, Barkley, now a junior quarterback for the Trojans, remembers Palmer’s 2002 season, the year he won the award while throwing for 3,942 yards and 33 touchdowns.Record breaking · Junior quarterback Matt Barkley threw for 468 passing yards Saturday aternoon against Arizona in USC’s 48-41 victory, besting Carson Palmer’s nine-year record of 448 passing yards. – Luciano Nunez | Daily TrojanOn Saturday, in front of a crowd of 63,707 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Barkley shattered the former Trojan signal caller’s single-game record for passing yards with 468 of his own. Along with four touchdown passes, Barkley’s record-setting display helped lead USC (4-1, 2-1) to a narrow 48-41 victory over Arizona just one week after the team’s first loss of the season at Arizona State.“It’s crazy because I remember looking up to Carson Palmer and he’s one of my heroes,” Barkley said. “I did want to be in his shoes.”The offensive outburst, the most points USC has scored in a game this season, was needed to stave off a Wildcats team (1-4, 0-3) that also moved the ball successfully, scoring four second-half touchdowns. Behind its own seasoned signal caller in senior Nick Foles, who completed 41-of-53 pass attempts, Arizona outscored USC 29-21 in the final two quarters.“That’s a great team with some great receivers,” USC coach Lane Kiffin said of the Wildcats. For the second week in a row, USC’s defense surrendered more than 40 points, allowing 554 yards of total offense before nearly relinquishing a late two-touchdown lead. The Trojans also allowed Arizona to convert 37 first downs, the most in school history.Photo courtesy of Luciano Ninez“They went down the field a bit too easy in the second half,” Kiffin said. “We just need a full defensive game.”Leading 48-34 with less than two minutes remaining in the game, USC opted to try and convert a fourth-and-one play from its 47-yard line, but Barkley’s pass to senior wide receivers Brandon Carswell was incomplete, giving the Wildcats, who scored six plays later on a four-yard touchdown pass from Foles to freshman wide receiver Austin Hills, a shorter field.“You have the opportunity to put the game away,” Kiffin said of the decision not to punt. “We’re going to believe in our players.”But in the first half, the Trojans defense, which had forced just three interceptions all season, looked slightly different, as evidenced by its two interceptions of Foles, who had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 10:0 prior to Saturday’s game. With 7:19 remaining in the first quarter, junior safety T.J. McDonald intercepted Foles when a pass sailed over the middle of the field.Minutes later, on the next Arizona drive after a 46-yard field goal from freshman kicker Andre Heidari gave USC a 10-0 lead, Foles was picked off by McDonald again.“To get them early changed the momentum of the game,” McDonald said. “It pumped up the team and they were able to go put points on the board.”Photo courtesy of Luciano NunezThree plays later, Barkley connected with freshman wide receiver Marqise Lee on a 38-yard touchdown pass, ballooning USC’s lead to 17. The Trojans would go on to score again in the second half on another Barkley pass, his third of the game.“They just sat back and gave us a lot of routes,” Barkley said. “And across the board, I had protection.”The defense also limited Arizona to just two scores in the first half despite 227 yards of total offense.“I was just happy with the turnovers,” Kiffin said. “It was good to see.”But the offense, which finished just 18 yards shy of 600 total yards, outshined whatever noteworthy plays the defense made.In addition to Barkley’s performance, sophomore wide receiver Robert Woods finished with 14 receptions for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Similarly, his high school teammate, freshman wideout Marqise Lee totaled 144 receiving yards and one touchdown on eight catches.Photo courtesy of Luciano Nunez“[Barkley’s] putting the ball on the money, on point every time,” Woods said. “He’s making it really easy on us because he puts it right where it needs to be.”Equally, Woods and Lee have made it easy on Barkley. Of his 32 completions, 22 went to Woods and Lee.“I’ve played with him since high school, and it’s exciting to see him grow,” Woods said of Lee. “I’m real proud of him.”Despite a young offensive line that looked particularly young a week ago in the Trojans’ 43-22 loss to Arizona State, Barkley was not sacked once against the Wildcats.“Our line was a huge component because of the protection,” Barkley said of the unit, which on average is allowing less than one sack per game. “I didn’t get touched once, except when I rolled out of the pocket. They were huge.”Photo courtesy of Luciano NunezWith the Trojans heading into a bye week before an Oct. 13 contest against California at AT&T Park in San Francisco, most players appear content with the win — at least for now.“In a sense, it is what it is,” freshman linebacker Dion Bailey said in the moments following the game. “We’ll take our wins.”last_img read more

Warriors sweep aside Cavs to capture third NBA title in four seasons

first_imgThe Golden State Warriors earned their third NBA title in four seasons after completing a comprehensive 4-0 series win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.Coach Steve Kerr described the triumph as “the hardest so far” but his Warriors side routed the Cavs 108-84 to prevail in the fourth consecutive finals meeting between the teams.Stephen Curry scored 37 points for the Warriors, while LeBron James claimed 23 in what could be his final Cavs game.James is a free agent next month. The 33-year-old American, playing in his eighth consecutive finals, said he had “no idea at this point” about his future and would consider the decision with his family.’We just know how to win’The win added to the Golden State Warriors’ victories in 2015 and 2017 and was the first finals clean sweep since the Cavs were demolished by San Antonio Spurs in 2007. It was the second time the Warriors have secured the championship in Cleveland during Kerr’s four-year tenure.”I remember sitting in this room three years ago and it seemed like a dream. This feels like reality,” Kerr said. “I hope that doesn’t sound arrogant. It’s just the talent we have and the experience we’ve gained.”A James slam dunk had Cleveland ahead 39-38 halfway through the second quarter, but Golden State responded to lead 61-52 at half-time and eased to victory from there.”We just know how to win,” said Curry. “We keep waking up every day and trying to get better and we end up here. We can’t get enough of this feeling.”Wherever that puts us in the conversation in the history of the NBA or being a dynasty… we’ll have plenty of time to discuss that later. We want to keep this thing going as long as we can.” Curry top scored but it was Kevin Durant who was named Finals MVP for the second year in a row, adding 20 points, 12 rebounds and a post-season career high of 10 assists. It was the 28th consecutive play-off game in which he has scored at least 20 points.”They have five guys on the floor that can dribble, pass and shoot,” said Cavs coach Tyronn Lue. “Even when you do defend them well, they’ve got guys like Steph and KD who can make unbelievable shots.”‘Broken hand was self-inflicted’ – LeBronWhile Golden State are building one of the great basketball dynasties, Cleveland’s future is clouded by uncertainty.James, widely regarded as the greatest player of his generation, is expected to leave for a second time, having returned to the franchise in 2014 after departing for Miami four years earlier. The three-time champion revealed he had played the last three matches with a broken right hand, sustained after he scored his best play-off points haul of 51 in the opener. The Cavs’ talisman reportedly suffered the injury after punching a blackboard in frustration after his side spurned an opportunity to win in the final seconds.”It was self-inflicted,” he said. “I was very emotional for a lot of different reasons and I let that get the best of me.”On the night, James top scored for his side and left to a standing ovation after playing 41 of the game’s first 44 minutes, but it was his least productive performance of the series.”To be the best player in the world and to give everything you’ve got in your 15th season, play all 82 games and carry this team the way he did is a testament to his character,” Lue said. “He’s a bad boy and I love having him on our team. He fights and competes to the end. Sometimes you can give everything you’ve got and still come up short.”I hope he stays. But after a game like that I’m not in any position to talk about that.”last_img read more
