Facing runoffs, Georgia’s Republican senators ask the state’s top elections official, also a Republican, to step down.

first_imgMr. Raffensperger responded quickly in a statement of his own. “Let me start by saying that is not going to happen,” he said. – Advertisement – Mr. Trump has continued to falsely insist the election was being stolen from him. The move by the senators, who have both been closely aligned with the president, also underscores the infighting taking place among Republicans even as the party braces for a bitter showdown during the January runoffs. Some conservatives fear that impugning the electoral process will depress the vote among Republican voters, who may not turn out if they do not trust the legitimacy of the electoral process. “We believe when there are failures, they need to be called out — even when it’s in your own party,” the senators said in their statement, which did not offer any specific allegations or explain how they believed Mr. Raffensperger had fallen short. “Honest elections are paramount to the foundation of our democracy,” they said. “The Secretary of State has failed to deliver honest and transparent elections. He has failed the people of Georgia, and he should step down immediately.” “Trump is gonna cost the GOP the Senate,” Erick Erickson, a Georgia-based conservative commentator, wrote on Twitter. “His supporters are internalizing that the election in Georgia was stolen so why bother even trying.”In a briefing before the statement was issued on Monday, Gabriel Sterling, the voting system implementation manager for Mr. Raffensperger’s office, sought to debunk the various allegations that had circulated and said the election had run smoothly, despite long lines at times during early voting. He noted that the average wait time to vote on Election Day was two minutes — “that’s unheard of in this state, ever.”“The facts are the facts, regardless of outcomes,” he said, adding, “In this state, this time, this election on Election Day was an amazing success.” – Advertisement – Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler of Georgia on Monday called for the resignation of the state’s top elections official, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, as they accused his office of failing to oversee an honest and transparent election without evidence or citing specific concerns. Their extraordinary joint statement on Monday came as a rift among Republicans in Georgia has intensified as Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s lead over President Trump has steadily grown, pushing the president’s supporters to lash out against Mr. Raffensperger, who is a Republican. – Advertisement – “I know emotions are running high,” he added. “Politics are involved in everything right now. If I was Senator Perdue, I’d be irritated I was in a runoff. And both senators and I are all unhappy with the potential outcome for our president.”Mr. Raffensperger said that the process of reporting results had been orderly and followed the law.The results in Georgia have drawn widespread notice and alarmed Republicans, as Mr. Biden is outperforming Mr. Trump by more than 10,000 votes in a state Mr. Trump won in 2016. Both senators have been forced into runoff races against Democrats, contests that could determine control of the Senate.- Advertisement –last_img read more

Kresna Graha Investama to conserve cash, expand into new ventures

first_imgPublicly listed holding company PT Kresna Graha Investama has stated that it is working to ensure profitability by looking for businesses with good growth potential and good quality as it ventures into new business sectors.“We’re shying away from a cash burning strategy,” Kresna Graha Investama business analyst and investor relations group head Stanley Tjiandra said during a virtual shareholders’ meeting on Friday. The company, which focuses on finance, investment and technology, has been transitioning into the digital space since 2015. It is now the parent company of payment gateway PT M Cash Integrasi, digital exchange platform PT NFC Indonesia and cloud advertising company PT Digital Mediatama Maxima, among other digital firms.  Kresna Biotech Ventures is also planning to invest funds in San Diego-based biotech company, Samumed, which focuses on research and development for tissue-level regeneration technology. However, PT Kresna Graha Investama saw its net profit slump last year as it expanded its business into new fields. Its net profit in 2019 fell by 57.1 percent to Rp 216.1 billion from the Rp 503.5 billion it had booked in 2018. It reported that its returns from the finance and investment sector saw a notable decline, while it booked growth on the technology and digital front. From the Rp 11.62 trillion the company booked in revenue last year, Rp 11.1 trillion came from the technology and digital front, or about 95.5 percent of the company’s total revenue, higher in than the 88.2 percent contribution in the previous year. Kresna Graha Investama’s share prices, traded on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) under the stock symbol KREN, had jumped almost 26 percent to Rp 97 as of 12:16 p.m. Jakarta time on Wednesday. The stocks have lost more than 83 percent in the last year, Bloomberg data shows.Michael said the company’s share prices were not a reflection of the company’s fundamentals but were rather affected by the ongoing global crisis as well as the Jiwasraya scandal which had sent a ripple through the financial industry. On March 23, the company released a statement that it was going to buy back its shares to “help stabilize the price in volatile market conditions”. The buyback is being held for a period of three months from March 24 to June 24. The company has limited the shares’ purchase price at a cap of Rp 515 per share.Topics : Its shift to new industries has been largely rewarded, as most of its subsidiaries operating in the digital space saw a surge in profit last year.PT NFC Indonesia booked a profit of Rp 36 billion (US$2.53 million) in 2019, 126 percent higher than the year before. PT Digital Mediatama Maxima’s profit increased by 119 percent to Rp 17 billion, and PT Distribusi Voucher Nusantara (DIVA) recorded a 9.5-fold increase in profit to Rp 94 billion.  “We don’t want to join investments where the old economy dominates. We want to enter the new economy,” Kresna Graha Investama founder and president director Michael Steven said during the shareholders’ meeting, explaining the company’s reason for entering Indonesia’s digital economy. Last year, the company announced its plan to enter the life sciences and biotechnology space through its subsidiary, Kresna Biotech Ventures. As of December of last year, it was finalizing an investment plan with RWDC Industries, based in Singapore and the United States, whose mission is to replace single-use plastic with biodegradable materials. last_img read more

Jacob Johns – Easyodds – Preparing for The Cheltenham Festival

first_imgShare Related Articles Submit Share Spotlight ups matchday commentary reach and capacity for new EPL Season  August 21, 2020 Spotlight Sports takes over MansionBet blog  June 18, 2020 StumbleUpon Spotlight delivers Racing Post translated services for Pari-Engineering Russia August 26, 2020 Jacob Johns, EasyoddsWith less than two weeks to go until the biggest horse racing meet of the year, we caught up with Jacob Johns, one of the leading horse racing tipsters at odds comparison site Easyodds, to find out more about his company’s preparation for The Festival and how he expects the bookmakers to respond after the ‘Worst Ever Cheltenham’ in 2016.SBC: How have you prepared for the Cheltenham Festival?JJ: Cheltenham Festival is usually one of, if not the, busiest week for Easyodds in terms of users on site, so we give ourselves every chance to make a success of it as a business. We prepare an SEO and content plan months in advance with search terms decided upon our ante-post tips and Cheltenham Festival news pieces, and we strike deals with bookmakers to be a part of our Cheltenham Festival centre and exclusive app.We first created a stand-alone Cheltenham app last year – which received positive data results for the business and got a good review in the Racing Post on Sunday, which we were very proud of.This year we have been ahead of schedule with the release of the app; we are already seeing more users than we had last year and have even more content already, with more coming daily between now and the start of the Festival via myself and guest tipster Steven Power – the Racing Blogger.SBC: How are you hoping to stand out from the other odds comparison providers?JJ: As above, we have a bespoke and exclusive Cheltenham app, providing the usual Easyodds service of odds comparison, tips, free bets and offers, but for the Festival. It’s a one-stop-shop for your Cheltenham Festival needs. It’s an improved user experience which is making comparing the latest odds easier and faster than ever before for Festival punters. We also have a much larger social audience than ever, including our ever-growing presence on YouTube with myself and our editor Ross Casey making multiple Cheltenham videos in the weeks leading up to the Festival which are seeing great numbers already. These are available in-app and will continue to be produced in the lead-up to and throughout the Festival. Our successful two-part Cheltenham preview video with the enigmatic ‘Racing Blogger’ certainly saw our comments section blowing up. We are the punter’s pal and we aim to give our users value for money via our odds comparison, whilst also entertaining and informing them with our social media.SBC: Are there any betting trends or strategies that you expect to see this year?JJ: The favourites have dominated proceedings for the past couple of years, so I expect them to be hammered more than ever this year. Of course, with multiples becoming more and more popular we should expect to see short priced favourites being lined up in Lucky 15’s throughout the Festival as well. Also, everyone wants to get their Festival off to a flyer so they will be latching onto something on day one to make their week. Usually the ‘Willie Mullins multiple’ is the obvious place to start but it seems unlikely this year. If Charli Parcs goes for the Supreme, I think we could get a lot of punters latching onto the Charli Parcs – Altior – Buveur D’air Nicky Henderson treble instead.SBC: Do you expect to see more conservative pricing after last year’s ‘Worst Ever Cheltenham’?JJ: In all honesty, I don’t. This is the biggest horse racing meeting by a long distance and the bookies are just going to be interested in getting new punters depositing. We’ve already seen some crazy new customer offers from the newer bookies to get their foot in the door, such as Bet On Brazil, and I fully expect many of the short-priced favourites to be bigger on the day, with the players piling in. So, in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be the opposite!last_img read more

Three things we learned from the World Cup today

first_imgHere, AFP Sport looks at three things we learned today.Germany should have heeded the warningsWhen Toni Kroos’ 95th-minute winner against Sweden hit the net, most assumed a corner had been turned and that Germany would move into the last 16 with little more fuss.Instead, they were beaten by South Korea and crashed out in the group stage of a World Cup for the first time in 80 years.Their poor performances coming into the tournament proved to be indicators, not outliers. Germany had won only once in six matches and that became seven when they lost to Mexico in Moscow. In the end, it was the victory over Sweden that was the one-off.Germany’s misery is a triumph for the Swedes, who top the group, for Mexico, who beat them so convincingly, and even Korea, who go out on a high after their storming finale. But for the reigning world champions, this was a disaster, as unexpected as it was dramatic.Joachim Low has already said he will consider his future as coach. The inquest is just beginning.Brazil make quiet progressBrazil have qualified from a World Cup group for the 13th consecutive time and while there has been little in their three games so far to set the pulse racing, they have improved with every match.A 2-0 win over Serbia was hardly spectacular but there is a solidity to Tite’s side that means Brazil head into the last 16, having conceded only one goal and with momentum their rivals lack. The opening draw with Switzerland set alarm bells ringing and the anxiety was real in the final minutes against Costa Rica when the score was still goalless. But two late strikes in Saint Petersburg put them in control of Group E and against Serbia, they finished the job.Neymar played 90 minutes again as he continues to regain sharpness and the striker’s grin at the full-time whistle said it all. Their rivals may be stuttering but Brazil are quietly hitting their stride.Bottom half full of surprisesSweden’s progress as group winners adds to a surprising bottom half of the draw, which now includes Spain, Russia, Croatia, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland. In the top half, meanwhile, sit France, Argentina, Uruguay, Portugal, Brazil and Mexico.Japan and Belgium are currently on track to complete the bottom section, Senegal and England the top, but that could change on Thursday. What is clear is the top half boasts more of the established favourites even if the likes of France, Argentina and Portugal are yet to really convince. In contrast, the likes of Croatia and Sweden have less pedigree but are showing better form and cannot be underestimated.Belgium and England play for first place in Group G on Thursday. It will be intriguing to see how eager each side is to win.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Germany midfielder Toni Kroos cuts a lonely figure after defeat to South Korea © AFP / BENJAMIN CREMELSAINT PETERSBURG, Russian Federation, Jun 27 – Germany’s defence of their World Cup crown ended in the group stage after they suffered a stunning defeat to South Korea on Wednesday. The four-time champions’ exit amounts to one of the greatest shocks in the tournament’s history, allowing Sweden and Mexico to go through while in Group E, Brazil and Switzerland advanced.last_img read more
