Making Saturn’s Moons with a Bang

first_imgImpacts are a favorite tool for planetary scientists to create beautiful things. The press had just gone wild with visions of a colossal impact creating the Earth-Moon system (10/18/2012), when Saturn cried, “Me, too!”  A spate of reports claims the improbable assortment of moons at the ringed planet are the result of another dramatic impact (at least in simulations).  The story was carried by Space.com, Live Science, Science Daily and Nature News (i.e., the usual suspects). It’s not that the Saturn system “did” form this way; it’s that it “could” have, as Nature News‘ headline states: “Moon-merge model could explain Saturnian system;  Simulation suggests that the moons of Saturn were once more like Jupiter’s.”  The Jupiter system is hard enough to explain, but planetologists feel it is a little more orderly than Saturn’s odd collection of small icy bodies (with active Enceladus and inactive Mimas), big icy bodies, and Titan, the oddest of all. With widely ranging densities and locations, Saturn’s six mid-size satellites are among the strangest in the outer Solar System. Measuring between 300 and 1,500 kilometres in diameter, the moons have varying characteristics: several are made almost entirely of frozen water; one, Enceladus, is rockier and geologically active; and some show evidence of submoons and rings. How did they get this way? With their charming impact video, the Saturnian modelers are apparently trying to share the limelight with the Galvanized Lunacy club: “Earth’s moon is thought to have formed from a giant impact about 4.5 billion years ago. And just as the moon and Earth are geochemical twins, the half-dozen or so medium-size moons of Saturn are similar in composition to Titan’s icy mantle, researchers said.”Science Daily included this gaffe by the modeler:“What makes the Saturn system so beautiful and unique could be its youth,” Asphaug said. “While we don’t have a preferred timeframe for this origin scenario to play out, it could have happened recently if something came along to destabilize the Saturn system, triggering the collisional mergers that formed Titan.”Nature News, though, called on Hal Levison, whose toy models have trouble creating Uranus and Neptune (8/06/2004), to do the reality check:But Hal Levison, an astronomer who studies planetary dynamics at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, says that the model is currently too simple to work. As the model is now configured, he says, the mid-size moons would inevitably accrete on to Titan rather than survive in isolation.Perhaps he said this to help keep his colleagues in the planetary billiards hall employed, and to keep the game going (10/18/2012).Warning: never buy a house from these folks.  They bang the materials against each other and hope something emerges. The best part of this story is Eric Asphaug admitting that Saturn’s system looks young.  At the 15th anniversary of Cassini mission, he is well aware of the problems with the rings, Enceladus, Titan and other things that cannot fit into the standard 4.5 billion year timeline.  It’s a tacit admission that the evidence does not fit the standard story without a colossal ad hoc rescue device. Pansare murder: Maharashtra SIT to interrogate Sri Ram Sene activist Waghmore

first_imgUnravelling the Gauri Lankesh murder case The Maharashtra SIT is planning to interrogate the arrested Sri Ram Sene activist Parashuram Waghmore, prime accused in the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, in connection with the killing of veteran communist leader Govind Pansare, said police sources.“A team of the State SIT will be going to Karnataka soon to interrogate Waghmore,” said Sanjay Kumar, additional director general (ADG), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), who is heading the SIT in the Pansare murder case.Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Kumar, however, said that the Maharashtra SIT would not be seeking Waghmore’s custody as the suspects in both crimes [Lankesh and Pansare] were affiliated to different fringe outfits.“The suspects in our [Pansare] case and the Gauri Lankesh case belong to different groups. In the Pansare case, the suspects belong to the Sanatan Sanstha while in the latter they are associated with the Sri Ram Sene and the Hindu Yuva Sene,” he said, adding that there were two weapons used in the Pansare murder case. Also Read  Mr. Kumar further said that the Maharashtra and the Karnataka SITs had been coordinating and that the former team had even visited the neighbouring State once last month. The Karnataka SIT have yet to recover the murder weapon – a 7.65 mm bore country-made pistol – reportedly used to kill Pansare, scholar M.M. Kalburgi and Lankesh.“Since the Karnataka SIT have spoken of a connection between the two [Lankesh and Pansare] cases, the Maharashtra SIT ought to seek Waghmore’s custody. Especially, as the ballistic report says that the same weapon was used,” Megha Pansare, Pansare’s daughter-in-law, told The Hindu. Not a smooth investigationPansare, along with his wife Uma, were repeatedly shot at by motorcycle-borne assailants while returning from a morning stroll in Kolhapur’s Sagar Mal locality on February 16, 2015. While Ms. Pansare survived, the communist leader succumbed to his wounds in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on February 20.Since then, investigation into Pansare’s murder has been marred by the tardy pace of probe agencies, leading to the prime accused, Sanatan Sanstha activist Sameer Gaikwad, being granted bail.In June last year, the court, after three rejections, had accorded conditional bail to Gaikwad, who was picked up from Sangli district in western Maharashtra in September 2015 – the first arrest in the Pansare case.In January this year, the Kolhapur sessions court granted conditional bail to radical Hindutva activist Virendra Tawde in connection with his suspected role in the killing of the veteran leader.According to probe agencies, Tawde is a crucial link to the murders of both Pansare and rationalist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar. The SIT’s supplementary charge sheet even names Tawde as ‘mastermind’ in the Pansare murder, suspecting him of conducting the reconnaissance before the murder.last_img read more

Fifth MossType LNG Carrier Joins MISC Group

first_imgMalaysian shipowner MISC Group has taken delivery of Seri Cemara, the final of five MOSS-type liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).The 150,200 CBM LNG carrier joins its sister vessels Seri Camellia, Seri Cenderawasih, Seri Cempaka and Seri Camar on long-term charter to Petronas, Malaysia’s oil and gas corporation. The new generation of Seri C Class LNG carriers have the capability to call at all major LNG terminals worldwide as well as loading capability at floating LNG (FLNG) units, MISC said. “Petronas is committed to deliver a safe and reliable supply of energy. It is therefore of utmost importance that we have access to the most reliable, safe and operationally efficient fleet of LNG carriers to serve the needs of our customers worldwide,” Petronas President & Group CEO, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, said at the naming ceremony.“The new generation of carriers is highly significant for MISC as we forge ahead in fulfilling our vision to consistently provide better energy-related maritime solutions and services. This project is especially meaningful as it represents our commitment to exceed the expectation of our customers, conducting our business in a responsible and sustainable manner, as well as in ensuring optimum value creation over time,” Chairman of MISC Dato’ Ab Halim said. The MOSS Type vessels have been built with an Integrated Hull Structure (IHS) which provides a continuous cover enclosure and shields four separate spherical tanks. The vessels are installed with pre-swirl duct and Propeller Boss Cap Fin (PBCF) that are able to provide around 4 percent energy savings at design draft, along with an X-twister rudder for improved maneuvering performance, according to MISC.Other green technology features of the vessel include the installation of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for the diesel generator to comply with the latest IMO Tier III requirement and the Ozone Ballast Water Treatment System. They will be powered by an Ultra Steam Turbine (UST) plant. The vessels, to be designated with ECO Notation, can operate entirely on LNG for full compliance with existing and impending Sulphur Emissions Control Area (SECA) regulations. The delivery of Seri Cemara brings the current number of MISC’s LNG fleet to 29 vessels.Image Courtesy: MISClast_img read more
