Auburn to Honor Charles Barkley with Statue Outside Arena

He began his career in the NBA as a first-round draft pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984. Barkley became a Hall of Fame hooper and was later named as one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players during the league’s 50th anniversary season.Auburn officials said the new statue will recognize the former athlete’s many accomplishments during his time at the university and beyond. The school retired Barkley’s jersey in 2001.“It’s more than about what Charles Barkley accomplished here at Auburn, which is certainly historic, but it has been about his life’s work and contribution,” said Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl. “We want to recognize one of the most respected, philanthropic NBA legends, Hall of Famer, for his lifetime achievements.“Our Auburn Family is so blessed to have an Auburn man like Charles Barkley in the public eye representing us,” Pearl continued. “A statue and a symbol like this serves to bring attention to that and will stand the test of time.”According to the Washington Post, Barkley averaged 14.1 points and 9.6 rebounds for Auburn as 1983-84 SEC player of the year, which earned him the nickname “The Round Mound of Rebound” for his unusual physique. Barkley has since gained notoriety as an entertaining, and oftentimes sharp-tongued sports commentator for TNT.“More than anything, Charles Barkley has become a global icon and this award honors the contributions he has given to Auburn both on and off the floor,” said Chuck Person, Auburn basketball’s associate head coach who played with Barkley at the university. “What an honor, and Auburn couldn’t have done this for a better man, my friend, Charles Barkley.” Charles Barkley. The retired basketballer will be the fourth former Auburn athlete to have a statue built in his honor, joining the Tigers’ Heisman Trophy winners Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan and Cam Newton.“It just means a great deal to me,” Barkley told AuburnTigers.com. “Being a kid from Alabama, going to Auburn. I think everybody knows what Auburn means to me. Social Media Doesnt Work Very Well Without Good Consistent Content

first_imgThe Online Publishers Association yesterday released some topline results from a new research study called “A Sense of Place: Why Environments Matter.” Conducted by Harris Interactive, the study examined how consumers perceive content in different online environments, and whether those perceptions impact consumer responsiveness to advertising. Harris polled more than 2,900 adult U.S.-based online consumers about their perceptions about three environments: media properties (such as ESPN.com, NYTimes.com, etc.), portal channels (i.e. AOL News, MSN Money) and social networks (Facebook, MySpace, et al.).What I found least interesting about the results is that consumers are more likely to trust content on media sites (72 percent) than from portal channels (60 percent). What was most interesting is that, despite all the hype around social media right now, only 23 percent indicated that they trust content from social media environments. Consumers who recall purchasing products from a site’s advertisers are significantly more likely to do so from media sites (8 percent) than portal channels (5 percent) or social media (3 percent).Meanwhile, a new report from the Nielsen Company says the popularity of social media “is undeniable,” with users spending nearly a quarter of their time online on social networks and blog sites. So, publishers the industry over are rushing to social media platforms to engage their users in the environments they now reportedly spend one out of every four minutes in, but those users still don’t trust the content/advertising they find in those environments. Awesome.I passed the OPA report along to Junta42 founder Joe Pulizzi to get his take on the report. What he found even more interesting than the reported lack of trust/response to social media sites was the study’s omission of the corporate brand environment. I think he has a point. The buzz I’ve heard is that users are increasingly turning to brand sites directly instead of media sites.“If the goal of the research was to help brand marketers understand the value of placing advertising on branded media sites, the research still leaves a lot of questions unanswered,” Pulizzi tells me.  “The challenge for brand marketers is not necessarily whether they should advertise on a media site versus a portal versus a social network.  They are trying to decide whether they should advertise, or whether they should invest more of their marketing dollars into their own engaging content.”Pulizzi says that trend of users going directly to a brand’s site instead of media outlets will continue to grow as more content is created by those brands. “Brands are developing sophisticated content strategies to take advantage of not only search, but lead generation programs and social media as well,” he says. “Social media doesn’t work very well without good, consistent content.”last_img read more

Kenya dam burst death toll rises to 41

Photo: AFPAt least 41 people died after a dam burst in central Kenya, police said Thursday, as residents described muddy waters ripping through their homes in what one survivor called “hell on earth”.After a severe drought, weeks of torrential rains in Kenya have led to flooding and mudslides that have left 172 dead.The private Patel dam, used for irrigation and fish farming, burst its earthen banks on Wednesday evening in Solai, near the Rift Valley city of Nakuru, regional police chief Gideon Kibunjah told AFP.The raging waters wiped out two villages, a local resident said, while power lines were swept away, leaving many without electricity. The search for victims on Thursday afternoon by heavy rains.”We have 41 people dead from this tragedy,” Kibunjah said, adding 20 of them were children. He said the search for victims was still going on.”It is a disaster because most people were asleep when the tragedy occurred and their houses were swept away.”He said 36 people had been hospitalised.- ‘Hell on earth’ -Survivor Ngugi Njoroge said he and his family had been having dinner when there was a “loud explosion of water that washed away our home.””I was with my parents and my younger brother. I don’t know where they are. I was carried away by the water but I was lucky as I clung to a tree until the water subsided,” he said from his hospital bed.”It was like hell on earth.”Miriam Karimi said she could not find any of her three children, including her four-year-old son.”When we heard noises, we thought it was raining heavily nearby. I’m so confused. I hope they are alive,” she said.A senior police officer at the scene, speaking on condition of anonymity, said emergency workers had spent the night combing through engulfed houses to retrieve bodies.”We found 11 of the bodies covered with mud at a coffee plantation and these are people who may have been escaping but could not make it due to the force and speed of the water from the flooded dam,” he said.”Most of them are women and children who could not have been able to run fast, and the elderly.”The dam is close to an informal settlement housing casual labourers who work on nearby farms.The Kenyan Red Cross estimates that up to 500 families were affected by the disaster, which took place some 150 kilometres (90 miles) northwest of Nairobi.- Deadly rainy season -Weeks of torrential rains in Kenya have led to flooding and mudslides countrywide.Government statistics released Wednesday showed that more than 220,000 people have been displaced by flooding as heavy rains hit the country after three consecutive failed rainy seasons had left it in drought.Since March, at least 21,000 acres (8,500 hectares) of farmland have been submerged in water with an estimated 20,000 animals killed, the Red Cross said last week.The floods have also destroyed road networks in some parts of the East African country and in some cases the military has stepped in to airlift residents from submerged houses.The Red Cross appealed last week for $5 million (four million euros) to help those affected.The deluge has affected large parts of East Africa, destroying crops and killing farm animals after a severe drought which had sent food prices and inflation soaring and left millions in need of food aid.In Rwanda 215 people have died because of floods and landslides since January, according to Philippe Habinshuti of the disaster management ministry.In Somalia flooding has displaced tens of thousands, while torrential rains have also caused havoc in Tanzania and Uganda.last_img read more
