PewDiePie bro army sneaks memefilled ad page onto WSJcom

first_imgFelix Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie, has taken issue with reporting by the Wall Street Journal in the past.  Screenshot by Joan E. Solsman/CNET PewDiePie’s bro army has hit back at a publisher that hit PewDiePie first.  The Wall Street Journal’s website was compromised with a page supporting PewDiePie in the race to keep his channel’s status as YouTube’s most-subscribed. The page, which claimed the WSJ was apologizing to the YouTube star and had fired journalists who misrepresented him, asked people to subscribe to his channel and included a string of memes.   PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, has been YouTube’s most-subscribed channel for more than five years, but in recent weeks he and his fanbase — known as the bro army — have been working to fend off another channel threatening to top his. T-Series, a channel with Indian movie trailers and music videos, is operated by an Indian music record label and film production company of the same name. At 77 million subscribers, PewDiePie’s channel leads T-Series by about 1.4 million. (The next-closest channel has 44 million.) WSJ joins the fight vs tseries 🔥https://t.co/O0WbSSNedI— ƿ૯ωძɿ૯ƿɿ૯ (@pewdiepie) December 17, 2018 A representative for Dow Jones, the publisher of the Journal, said the company has removed the page, which was operated by WSJ Custom Solutions, a unit of the company’s advertising arm. It’s a “branded content” unit that produces advertising pages that have many of the hallmarks of a news report. The page wasn’t affiliated with The Wall Street Journal newsroom, and the Journal’s publishing system is “completely separate” from the one used by WSJ Custom Solutions, he added.  “We have launched a full investigation,” the rep said. He didn’t respond to questions about whether the page was posted through a cyberattack or by somebody simply taking advantage of WSJ Custom Solutions’ tools in bad faith.  Kjellberg used his Twitter account to call out the ad page and its deletion.  Comments The message on the paper’s website said: “WallStreet Journal would like to apologize to pewdiepie. Due to misrepresentation by our journalists, those of whom have now been fired, we are sponsoring pewdiepie to reach maximum subscribers and beat Tseries to 80million. We also need your credit card number, expiry date, and the lucky 3 digits on the back to win the chicken dinner in fortnite.” The message, which concluded with an allusion to the Epic Gamers meme, included a string of image memes after it.  Last year, WSJ reports about racist and anti-Semitic overtones in some of Kjellberg’s video jokes led to an advertiser backlash against him. His channel lost the ability to run ads, a crucial way that channels generate revenue. Disney, which had a partnership with Kjellberg through its acquisition of a digital video agency Maker, cut ties with him too.   Originally published at 9:39 a.m. PT.  Updated at 10:16 a.m. PT: With subscriber count numbers.  Tech Culture: From film and television to social media and games, here’s your place for the lighter side of tech.  The Smartest Stuff: Innovators are thinking up new ways to make you, and the things around you, smarter. High Inflation Economic Slowdown Hits Indian PC Market Sales Decline by 59

first_imgThe overall sale of desktops and laptops in India has gone down in the third quarter of this year as compared to last year, recent data showed.According to market research firm Gartner Inc, India’s mobile PC market, which totalled nearly 2.9 million units in the third quarter of 2012, recorded a fall of 5.9 percent during the corresponding period last year.”Consumers accounted for 47 percent of total PC sales in the third quarter of 2012 compared to 55 percent in the third quarter of 2011,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.”This emphasises the fact that despite the festive season and availability of various end user schemes on PCs, the market was impacted by high inflation, global economic uncertainty and limited share of wallet as consumers preferred to spend on other consumer durables,” he added. In the third quarter this year, parallel imports and white boxes which accounted up to 47 percent of the whole desktop market showed a decline of 35 percent as compared to the same period of the previous year. Mobile PCs helped drive overall market growth with a similar 23 percent growth on a year-on-year basis. Lenovo retained the top position in the third quarter of 2012 with help of factors like the execution of the Tamil Nadu government order, and a strong increase in the consumer space. While HP’s PC shipment grew around 10 percent, Dell declined 22 percent compared to the third quarter of 2011. For local vendor’s like HCL PC market share declined to 3.4 percent in the third quarter with a 43 percent year-on-year decline from the third quarter in 2011. Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo represented around 60.6 percent of the market.last_img read more

Kenya dam burst death toll rises to 41

first_imgLocal residents wait inside an ambulance after Patel dam burst its bank at Solai, about 40 kilometres north of Nakuru, Kenya, on 9 May, 2018. Photo: AFPAt least 41 people died after a dam burst in central Kenya, police said Thursday, as residents described muddy waters ripping through their homes in what one survivor called “hell on earth”.After a severe drought, weeks of torrential rains in Kenya have led to flooding and mudslides that have left 172 dead. The private Patel dam, used for irrigation and fish farming, burst its earthen banks on Wednesday evening in Solai, near the Rift Valley city of Nakuru, regional police chief Gideon Kibunjah told AFP.The raging waters wiped out two villages, a local resident said, while power lines were swept away, leaving many without electricity. The search for victims on Thursday afternoon by heavy rains.”We have 41 people dead from this tragedy,” Kibunjah said, adding 20 of them were children. He said the search for victims was still going on.”It is a disaster because most people were asleep when the tragedy occurred and their houses were swept away.”He said 36 people had been hospitalised.- ‘Hell on earth’ -Survivor Ngugi Njoroge said he and his family had been having dinner when there was a “loud explosion of water that washed away our home.””I was with my parents and my younger brother. I don’t know where they are. I was carried away by the water but I was lucky as I clung to a tree until the water subsided,” he said from his hospital bed.”It was like hell on earth.”Miriam Karimi said she could not find any of her three children, including her four-year-old son.”When we heard noises, we thought it was raining heavily nearby. I’m so confused. I hope they are alive,” she said.A senior police officer at the scene, speaking on condition of anonymity, said emergency workers had spent the night combing through engulfed houses to retrieve bodies.”We found 11 of the bodies covered with mud at a coffee plantation and these are people who may have been escaping but could not make it due to the force and speed of the water from the flooded dam,” he said.”Most of them are women and children who could not have been able to run fast, and the elderly.”The dam is close to an informal settlement housing casual labourers who work on nearby farms. The Kenyan Red Cross estimates that up to 500 families were affected by the disaster, which took place some 150 kilometres (90 miles) northwest of Nairobi.- Deadly rainy season -Weeks of torrential rains in Kenya have led to flooding and mudslides countrywide.Government statistics released Wednesday showed that more than 220,000 people have been displaced by flooding as heavy rains hit the country after three consecutive failed rainy seasons had left it in drought.Since March, at least 21,000 acres (8,500 hectares) of farmland have been submerged in water with an estimated 20,000 animals killed, the Red Cross said last week. The floods have also destroyed road networks in some parts of the East African country and in some cases the military has stepped in to airlift residents from submerged houses. The Red Cross appealed last week for $5 million (four million euros) to help those affected. The deluge has affected large parts of East Africa, destroying crops and killing farm animals after a severe drought which had sent food prices and inflation soaring and left millions in need of food aid.In Rwanda 215 people have died because of floods and landslides since January, according to Philippe Habinshuti of the disaster management ministry. In Somalia flooding has displaced tens of thousands, while torrential rains have also caused havoc in Tanzania and Uganda.last_img read more
